It is one of the most addictive street drugs. Mainly used in the gay community at first, it is now used by all kinds of users. It is cheap compared to other uppers, and lasts much longer. It can be snorted, smoked, injected or ingested. Amphetamine and Methamphetamine (Methamphetamine is a chemical variation of A., with a much stronger effect on the central nervous system) increase the amount of dopamine in the brain. In low doses, Amphetamine is used for ADD, as it stimulates the brain but actually slows down the patient (e.g. Ritalin). It decreases hunger and leads to weight loss. Negative effects include sleep problems, restlesness, aggressiveness. Long-term negative effects include heart, liver, kidney and lung damage as well as psychosis. Methamphetamine is more addictive than the original drug and has a greater "rush ", followed by increased agitation and possibly violence. A user can go days without sleep - the coming down is even more brutal then and often makes the individual use even more. |
